Do you do a consultation before balayage? Yes — every balayage appointment at Prép includes a consultation at the start. Your stylist will review your hair history, current condition, and your colour goals before any product is applied. Can I get balayage if I've had box dye or chemical treatments? Yes, but it's important to disclose your full colour history during your consultation. Previously coloured hair behaves differently under lightener, and your stylist needs to assess your hair's current condition to plan a safe, effective service. In some cases, a strand test or a longer appointment may be needed.
Is balayage damaging to hair? Any lightening service involves some degree of chemical processing, but balayage is generally considered lower-damage than traditional foil highlights because lightener is applied away from the scalp and doesn't saturate the hair as heavily. At Prép, we use professional colour systems and conditioning treatments to protect hair integrity throughout the service.
How do I maintain my balayage between appointments? Use a sulphate-free shampoo to preserve colour longevity, a weekly deep conditioning mask to maintain moisture, and a UV-protective hair product if you spend time outdoors. Avoid washing with very hot water — it opens the cuticle and fades colour faster. Your stylist will recommend specific products suited to your hair type at your appointment.
